I have tried your suggestions including the filters. I did fail to back up the photos and thought it was set to automatically back up the collections. I guess they are lost forever now. Bummer

Whoa! Hold on. What happened?
Just a suggestion, but I believe there are some computer programs that will retrieve lost files, are there not? You might to a search to see if you can find one that will get your deleted file(s) back?
Ronz, If I have understood your previous posts, you have lost your collections.
Losing collections does not mean you have lost pictures or edits.
In the library module, in the left hand panel how may photographs are showing against "All Photographs"?
Do you keyword your photographs?
If you have not deleted the photos and do have keywords it is feasible to re-create the collections.

I sincerely doubt that has happened. At the risk of sounding critical (I promise, I'm not), it's likely just a situation of learning more about Lightroom.
It is a very well written, powerful piece of software and knowing how to control it makes your experience much, much better.
Do yourself a favor and look at the Adobe Lightroom Classroom in a Book series. It's available at Amazon and other online sites. I promise that if you get the book, read it, you'll be thanking me. It's that good, and when you're done with it, you'll be a Lightroom guru.
