New Flash for big groups

I am looking for a new flash for my Canon 5dMKII. I have been using a handlemount Sunpak 622 Super but it's getting tired. I will be using it to shoot school groups, sports groups, etc. I need battery power with exchangeable powerpacks and fast recycle, also wide angle.

I have a few 580EX II's that work very nicely on the MII.
Also the newer 600 EX series is worth considering. Nice flashes indeed!

I already have the 580EX II. Not nearly enough output and not wide enough. I shoot iso 400 to 800 at f11 to f16. Think about a football team- inside.

The 622 works so maybe I'll just get another or whatever is a step up.

Never a bad idea. The 600's are more powerful than the 580's, but for groups that size, I'd use at least three, probably more flashes (depends too on what you want to do).

The sunpak 622 is about 4 times the size of the 580 and has a handle mount. Guide number 200 at iso 100. I wanted to know if anyone had experience with something like the Metz 76MZ-5. it has a guide# of 249 at iso 100. It's a lot more expensive- about $1200 to $1300 with the adapters and batteries.

Maybe it's time to get a couple of stands and some umbrellas 2go. Radio triggers would be nice as well. Good luck. ;-)

Battery powered monoblocks? Just a thought, but would probably be at least 2x the light output for not much more than one new speedlight.

I think this answer requires you to figure out how much money you are willing to spend. Depending on that variable, you could buy anything from the Profoto Battery powered monolight, or two, down to just a couple of speedlights. I used to use a Metz CT60-1, with a lot of success, now I'm using the 70MZ-5, also a power house. In the past I've owned Novatron and Speedotron power packs and two heads for each, and used them for formal wedding shots, school proms, and school group shots. Maybe the answer may even be a faster lens in the same focal length that you are using now. So there's my five cents worth, it's always good to ask questions, try out equipment before you buy it, and come to a financially sound solution. Good luck, and post some pictures for us.

Here is a prom shot. The background is projected on a special screen behind the subject. All in camera. Two novatron lights. I understand lighting, all I wanted was to get feedback on another handle mount flash. Maybe something with TTL capability.

Get a good studio strobe with a shoot through umbrella! Many great ones out there. I use a Profoto Compact-R 600. We are talking powerful - I have 2 of them and shoot them remote with Pocket Wizards. One would probably be sufficient with proper placement etc. I'm sure there are many on the site that use various strobes/lights that can provide more guidance than I. If you do a bunch of these type shots it might be well worth the investment for a portable studio strobe. Of course multiple 580ex ii's would also get the job done. Good luck.

If you do this type of shoot for a living you might want to look at the new Profoto strobe that is battery driven and ETTL. It's an investment, I think they are around $2000, may come down a bit as it is still quite new. But, you'd be set, quick set up, tear down and a powerful portable light. Seems to me your current strobe did well with this group which is quite large.

I guess I need to stop complaining and get another newer 622. It has done the job for over 10 years. It also uses C cell batteries, regular or rechargeable. No TTL but a sensor.
