Hello. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good camera bag for travel? I currently need a bag to accommodate one DSLR, a 50mm lens, and a 17-40 mm lense. My 35-128 lens would be on the camera. I will be traveling to France in Feb. and New Zealand in March and have just put my equipment in a backpack before, but wondered what others use. Thank you for your time.

Linda, I found the LowePro site most appealing. http://www.lowepro.com They have many, many different lines of bags, then different models within each line.

I settled on the FastPack 250, for I wanted to carry my netbook computer also. It still looks brand new after all the use and it is amazingly strong and durable. I highly recommend their products.

I worked for a company called PKG's. They are a packing and shipping company in the states. An option you may want to consider is 'foam in place'. PKG's makes a custom box filled with foam that has been fitted around your camera and lens selections. The packing is guaranteed and your camera can go into the plane instead of carry-on.
I have shipped Picasso's, Stradivarius, 19th century Wedgwood, Computer systems, and everything else you can imagine. The 45 computers were shipped every 3-4 days in the same boxes, for a salesman demonstrating a new line of Computers, for the best part of a year, without any damage. The packaging does hold up well. Cost for your camera outfit would be around 50-60 dollars (I am guessing... been out of the company a long time now). We demonstrated the value of the packing by drop kicking a Waterford wine glass across the store (off walls and tables).
A box may not be what you were thinking, but if you travel frequently and do not want the camera as your 1 carry-on bag, this is an easily insured, safe and reusable method of transportation.

Stay away from the usual colors. If it should get grabbed by the wrong person it will stand out. After all, most are black.

I recently got an Ape Case. I really like it and I have room to grow. Granted I don't have as much equipment and many of you do, but I also got the smallest one they have. It is extremely well padded and the interior can be arranged to suit the needs of your equipment. It has a yellow interior so it is easy to see the equipment and not have to search black on black like most. Waterproof, has hard rubber feet, and very well padded.

Buying a camera bag for me was almost as much of a project as buying a new purse :)

And, yes, if you need good music, take some James Marshall Hendrix with ya!

I have an Ape 4000 coming tomorrow. It's going to be a moose ans should handle all my gear. I already have a roller bag, but I wanted one that will handle my tripod with ease. I had a lowro a couple of years ago, but the tripod pocket dragged along the ground an wore hole in the pocket. Sold the bag off for a big lost.
Will have to see what happens with the Ape tomorrow.

I have one with a big yellow & black biohazard symbol sewn on it. Keeps the riffraff from fingering it.

This was my first time asking a question, although I have greatly enjoyed looking through this site and learning a lot of things. You've all been so helpful. I will check into the resources you've mentioned. I will be asking more questions as time goes on...I can see. Linda

I have been using an original Domke bag for almost 30 years.
I usually carry my Canon 7D, 2 lenses and a flash or 3 lenses without the flash and some filters and extra compact flash cards.
The bag looks a little beat up but it is in great condition and it does the job its meant to do.
Also it doesn't have any name on it so I am not advertising to the world that this an expensive bag with expensive equipment in it so come take it.

Never had a problem just sent it thru their machine.
When I was using a film camera I use to place the film in one of those bags that was suppose to prevent the x rays from ruining your film. That bag seemed to work and never had a problem with the film or airport security
