Where can I get a good price on a Nikon D800? I'm retired with a limited budget.

The D800 has been out long enough that you may find a used one around. If you are lucky, an estate sale where the people don't know what it is. Most likely, you can by used or refurbished. Be very careful of Ebay and verify serial numbers before you send any money, because if it is NOT a US serial number Nikon will NOT service it. Adorama and B&H, Amazon and many camera retailers sell used and refurbished. Be aware that there is the D800 (sensor has anti-morea (sp) and D800e which does not. The D800e is good for very detail patterns where the D800 is going to exhibit an image kind of like looking at an angle though a screen.
Both are great camera although the D800 (original) had a few focus issues in early models that may or may not have been fixed by the original owner returning it to Nikon.

Got mine from B&H - a Nikon refurb with only 250 shots and a very good price.

I'd check Nikon USA Used Equipment as mention earlier, KEH again mentioned earlier and B&H.

Good Luck!

Beware of disreputable dealers! If you see a low price for a new D800, ask here about the dealer. Non-new would be a good way to go.

Maybe get a D610 instead, it's 2/3 the price with very comparable image quality?

My opinion the D610 is great but not nearly the camera that the d-800e is.

Go rent and compare!

Are you suggesting I rent, or the OP? A 4-day rental for both is about $300, which is a big chunk for the OP who is on a limited budget, more than 10% of what they will eventually pay for a camera. I already made my decision before I had many choices, ordering the D800 on the day it was announced, unaware of any D600 rumors. Pretty convenient way out of having to decide, right? :-)

You should monitor:

http://www.nikonpricewatch.com/product/03848/Nikon-D800-price.html

They have plenty of vendors comparing one another. You can also set a notification where an individual email will be sent to you if it falls within your price range. They also include a list for refurbished.
