Amazon tells me that my D300 is not compatible with a Nikon 14-24mm F/2.8 ED IF AF-S lens. I was on the understanding that DX cameras would work with all full frame lens's. Advise please...

The issue might be having an in-camera focus motor or not.

It doesn't sound right. Nikon does not make incompatible lenses for their cameras. It should work just fine.
There is no mention of non-compatibility on the UK Amazon. I understood that all AF lenses were compatible with D300. The great authority on this subject is MtShooter. If you send him a PM I am sure he will know the definitive answer.

The Amazon comment is based on the Canon EF/EFS incompatibility issues and has nothing to do with Nikon compatibility. ANY Nikon mount AF lens will work just fine with your D300, no issues whatsoever.

I am pretty sure every Nikon autofocus lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D300, especially any lens from the past 20 years.
Yes, I know and I just am thinking for the future. Someday I will get a full frame camera so when I am buying lenses now I would like to get lenses for my future camera. Someday......

I agree with your thinking. My first DSLR was D70s 'kit' from Cameta, came with two cheap Sigma zooms. When I started buying lenses, I only bought FX and have finally made the move to a D800.
Of course they are compatible but you could be better served using a DX lens on a DX camera.
Would you care to expound on that statement a little? Why would anyone restrict themselves to the limited selection of DX lenses when FX lenses work even better, and offer so many faster lens choices than DX?
Of course they are compatible but you could be better served using a DX lens on a DX camera.
Why would that be?
I have a D7100 and use both DX and FX lenses. Although I've been progressing towards just FX.
While the FX lens is going to be more expensive than the DX version ( careful on generalizations ), I find that the FX versions are faster, sharper and have less distortion. OTOH, they are going to be bigger and heavier.
Of course they are compatible but you could be better served using a DX lens on a DX camera.
If you want a lens with a wide focal length of less than 24mm, then I agree that a DX lens would be more efficient (size and cost). But if the widest focal length will be more than 24mm, then the FX lens is often the better choice. Nikon only makes a handful of DX lenses with the widest focal length greater than 24mm: the 55-200/55-300 consumer zooms and a few primes.
