When to shoot vertically...
...even though there are horizontal lines.
You shoot vertical right after you've shot horizontal.
I try never to shoot Vertical, but, sometime you need to. The picture you posted would only work vertical. I make photo books and the verticals always get in the way.
Sometimes when I'm not quite sure what will work best I do a vertical shot and a horizontal shot, then decide later which to keep by comparing the thumbnail images of each side by side; the one that is the most effective composition is the one I keep.
Btw, nice exposure and color!

I shoot vertical a lot if the subject is vertical, i.e., people or tall buildings. As with any shot, you have to watch out for the conversion of the vertical lines near the top of the picture. Sometimes unavoidable, and most times correctable, in post processing. Nice exposure and composition!

The black and white papers that that would work. I think I would try to straighten the picture. I don't shoot a lot of portrait but do do some in PP because the picture lends itself to it.
Nice shot JasPetrie. I shoot vertically when the picture I have formed in my head tells me to. Sometimes it lies to me though ;) I tend to shoot mostly horizontally, but sometimes you've just got to tilt the camera over! :D

I agree. The cues in my photo were obvious. Not always the case, however. Thanks.
