They're black widows. I think they're beautiful spiders but they are dangerous. These are the only species of spider that I kill, only as a practical matter. Years ago in the early 1970's an older friend got bitten by one while handling firewood. He had been tortured as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in WWII. He lost most of his teeth in that camp and had extensive scarring. In the hospital he told us that the pain of the black widow bite was worse than anything the Japanese prison guards did to him. A black widow bite can kill a child.

Would you let them go in your yard?
