If you look really hard you can see him.
I was shooting these flowers in Macro, and then I saw him. It was so amazing to see a spider through the Macro lens. My flash didn't fire, and by the time I got ready to shoot him, I couldn't find him anymore. :(
I did get these flowers. They were so tiny, I didn't even know they were flowers until I saw then in my macro lens. I took the first one with flash, but the sun started shining right on the flower, so I tried it without flash.
It's lots sharper with flash. I was really struggling to get the right flash power through my diffuser. I had this one with me
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003Y30334/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 because I was out on a very long hike and did not want to take the LiteScoop with me as it takes up so much room. I wonder if the LiteScoop would work better?

Your speedlight illuminated image #2 looks crisp & detailed. Here are a few suggestions:
1.) To brighten your sun-lighted background, increase your ISO to 200. Your subject is illuminated by your speedlight.
2.) What speedlight are you using? Make sure that the slide-out/drop-down plastic diffuser is in front of your flash face. You should have speedlight set to Manual mode, and you adjust output, depending on subject light or dark color. Start at 1/4 power. Also, set your speedlight to WIDEST pattern for better light diffusion.
3.) INSIDE your FotoDiox softbox, you will find a white cloth Velcro'ed to one side. Stretch it ACROSS the inside of your diffuser, and attach to Velcro strip on other side.
These two additional diffusions spreads light to your corners, so you reduce central hotspot.
You are on the right track.
Thanks, Douglass. I knew I had hot spots, and now I know what to try next. I have a Canon 550EX. I also have an old Nikon SB something or other that I got from Rpavich. It works well, but does not have all the setting choices that the 550 has.

Here is a photo of the 550EX with the plastic diffuser deployed. It is an excellent speedlight for macro.
What model Nikon speedlight do you also have? Since it will not function on a Canon camera, it may be useful to a Nikon owner.

No, it does function on my camera. I've tried it out. I have to wait until I get home or ask Rpavich what it is. I can't remember.

Old Nikon flashes will work on a Canon just not directly coupled to the hotshoe. You need to fire it with a PC-Sync Cable or a Wein Safesync. If you have an SB-26 you can set it up as an optical slave and fire it with your popup flash or the 550.
I like the third shot, well done for no speedlight. Don't see a jumper in the first shot, perhaps it jumped out of the frame ;-)

You have to look
really close A-Peer. He's hanging off the lower branch to the left.:-D I could see that you have to keep your sense of humor about you when shooting these little beasts! I've been waiting all winter to see a bug. I found a spider in my kitchen last week, but I accidentally squashed him when I tried to catch him. At least this one survived the shoot! :D
I just looked. It's an SB24. Rpavich told me it was old when he sent it to me. It does work on my Canon. I've used it.

Here is a severely processed image #1. I see no spider.

You can't see him? Douglass, look right under the branch. He's hanging upside down. Right in the middle of the pic almost half way down. You've got to at least see my first jumper. :-D This way we can compare him to one I take this time next year.

Maybe this thread should be titled the mystery of the missing spider. But then I saw him too. Very interesting.
So how do you people get your spiders to smile and say cheese?
