Picked up a brand new Nikon 50mm 1.4G lens. Took advantage of Nikon's $100 instant rebate + a little extra from my dealer. Paid $399 out the door. I got to go out yesterday as it was cool and Sunny here in Michigan. Took a ton of photos outside and some inside at various F-stops. Outside I used "P" mode. Inside I used "A" mode. Well here is what I have concluded. Outside almost all my shots were keepers. The ones which were not were focus issues I attribute to me. Inside the photo are also keepers. F1.4 is slightly soft. F2.8 is sharp and it keeps getting better to F5.6. After that I can not tell any difference if there is any. Super sharp. The lens is well built and so is the hood. I have read several reviews which state this lens uses a Ring Motor instead of the usual gear system. One reviewer actually disassembled the lens and verified a Ring Motor. Well the focus is fast with only a slight sound. I am happy with the results. Especially now that I have a reasonable chance of getting shots without a flash in venues where flash is prohibited or would be in bad taste.

Comments always welcome ......

You will find that quite a few high-quality lenses are a bit soft when shot wide open; ½ stop can make a world of difference in sharpness.
