If you care to look, here is just one of many shots with my 150-500. I've done no calibration this is just plug and play.

I have one and really like it. Price was right and so far it's worked well, even handheld on birds in flight.

This is from the first outing with it, on a D800 with the lens racked out to 500mm.

G/day all from Aus, can those of you that own, or have owned the 150x500 sigma lens, tell me do you think of it ,is it ok for bird photography, on my canon 600d, I am still using the kit lens 55x250, its alright, but apart from not having enough reach, it is rather slow to focus in A/F. is the sigma a faster lens,? I know it wont be real fast , but would be happy with anything a bit faster, the price I can get the 150x500 here in AUS, is not to bad, I realize it wont be as good as the very much more expensive Canon lenses, but they are well and truly out of my price bracket, thank you for any help, Colin

I'm up in Canada and made that decision last summer to purchase the Sigma 150-500. I shoot with a canon 50D. IF you take the time and effort to know both your camera and lens and apply the right adjustments (I shoot in Raw and Manual settings) your shots will be very good the the cost of this lens. Use a tripod IF the situation will let you. This lens has the image stabilisation on it as well. Just get the shutter up to avoid any soft shots.
Good luck. Hope you weather down under is better than up here where the "spring" weather is -27 Celsius. Give us another 6-7 weeks and it will be +27 Celsius.

For the price, it is a great lens. It is pretty heavy (any 500mm is going to be heavy with that much glass) but the OS will help with handheld shots if it is not too dark out. It looses some sharpness over 400mm, but can make good shots even at 500mm if you take your time. I was surprised at how fast it auto focuses. If you need the reach of a big lens and are on a budget, this one is worth the money.

The Sigma will AF faster than your Canon kit lens, as well as have the reach you are wanting to get closer. Fine tune the focus to the camera you are using if your camera offers that function. If not, order the lens direct from Sigma and send them your body, they will tune the lens focus to your body exactly and you will have a very sharp, very long telephoto lens to be proud of.
Good luck.

When fine tuning a lens, is the lens actually adjusted by the camera or does the camera "remember" how to adjust for the lens. Is that clear?

The camera itself adjusts for that particular lens. The CPU in the lens communicates with the camera every time it is mounted so the camera knows what adjustments to apply to what lens.

Great lens for the money. Does not work well with teleconverters.

Is this with all teleconverters? Have you tried the Sigma converter? I haven't tried one with mine as of yet.

I have not tried the Sigma converter. I have used the lens on the D300 and the D700 with Nikon TC's, and the issue is mostly with auto focus. I have found I get as good a result by cropping as using a TC.

I did a side by side test on my camera body between the Sigma 150-500 and a client's Nikkor 200-400 f/4 and could see no appreciable difference. That however did not stop me from eventually buying the Nikon 500 f/4. THAT made a difference! (Of course, you have to take out a loan on the house.)

Walk softly and carry a big lens.
