I'm very new to this but My Sony dsc-h55 w/10x lens is about the same as my new Nikon d-3100's 200mm. Except of course the DOF adjustments I can make once I learn what I'm doing.

Point and Shoot cameras are often much more than that. They have all sorts of adjustments available, but they don't have the removable lens of the DSLR. People tend to use the term P&S for any small camera.
The big advantage of these cameras is their huge zoom range, but the disadvantage is the quality of the images compared with a $1,500 DSLR lens. Unless you're going to print the picture at a large size, you probably won't notice the loss in quality.
There are infinite combinations of cameras, lenses, and settings. The important thing is to get out there and have fun taking pictures.

Practice, practice, practice...and have fun as you and your camera bound. Once you know it's limitation, you'll enjoy the camera you have, till it's time for you to grow into a more professional camera. Enjoy what you have, and learn to be more creative as you go.

I concur with all of the above. Have fun, stretch yourself and your camera. You'll know when it's time to move up or you'll plateau and stay satisfied with what you have at some point. After all, it's for your own enjoyment.
For me, this analogy works. I can drive down I-95 in a Ford pinto and arrive at the same location as I would in a 7-series BMW; but the getting there would have been a completely different experience. If I had used Porsche in the analogy, I would probably have been comparing mirrorless to DSLR; but all that does is add fuel to the flame.
Thank you. Guess I am alright 'til I can see the difference myself.
That makes it more clear to me. Thanks a lot.

Thanks, appreciate it!
Interesting avatar. I have one of them, slightly chewed by a dog - but not when it was plugged in.
I have a D800 with a bunch of lenses and I recently purchased a Sony RX100M2. The Sony is an amazing pocket camera and most of the time I just take the Sony.

I really like your street shots - good work. Gives me some ideas to expand my photographic fun with.
