An interview with Tony R,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Been shooting for 40 years. Developed my first roll as a boy scout and was hooked.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No real formal training, mostly learned from seminars etc. Seems like I do mostly landscape and macro.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Technical proficiency. Identifiable subject and emotion.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Nikon d5200, 40mm macro lens. Placed camera on a sand bag, used cable release. shot as slow as possible and stopped down for deep depth of field.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Lightroom 5. Adjust white balance and exposure, sharpen up and minor spot removals.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Like many, Ansel Adams made me look at light not just the subject. The crocus are so small that we walk by them without really seeing them. I wanted to capture the minute details that we normally don't see or appreciate.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I might try focus stacking and I'd punch in a little fill light from a reflector.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I had a better appreciation of zone system exposure. Its all about the light.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My hand held light meter.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I guess it would be my 16mm to 85mm Nikkor, it gives me a wide variety of focal lengths that suit most day to day needs.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot? I
Usually have my speed-light and a diffuser. I also take some form of reflector.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Hard to say, photography is such a big part of my non-working life.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I've been fortunate to be able to travel and I usually take a portable mini printer with me. When I am off the grid in depths of central or south America I will print the photos for my subjects. If I stay in one place for extended periods the people follow me around waiting for the afternoon when I print the photos. They just light up when you give them a photo of themselves or their family.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I am in the process of putting together a portfolio for Squarespace.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Photography is a process. The more you shoot the better your photos become. Enjoy the entire process, the setup, the shot and the Post Process.
