How frequently do you want to take the shots? If you are going for infrequency, or you are very disciplined, you can do it manually. There are timed controllers (intervalometers) available or you can tether a digital camera to a computer and control it that way. IOF you have a Mac, Sofortbild is a free program that will do time lapse.

I just wanted some info in case I wanted to get into it a little bit. It looks very interesting and I may want to try it on flowers in the spring.

What camera do you have? On my D300s there is a setting in the camera that will do this. Check your manuel. With Nikon it is called Interval timer settings. Fun to play with, but hard on the battery if you try to do to many. I did a snow fall last year. Took pictures of the snow building up outside on my picinic table through the window. One every 15 min. That's why I now have a grip with another battery. The battery only made it to 12" lol. We got 21" so I missed the last part. I had a yardstick taped up so you could see it growing. Now I am waiting for some heivy snow this year. Boy, that sounds dumb lol.

Do you have your manuel? Or just look in the cameras menue. I looked around on some of the Sony forums but didn't see any info on it. You can just Google Sony forums and see if you can find anything.

choose a flower that open and closes daily. Set a tripod up and frame your subject up, don't move it. use the same settings so there are no changes through out the series.

My D5100 has an Interval Setting in the Menu.

You can probably Google Sony A55 Manual and download a PDF version to your desktop. Handier than the manual.

I have a Sony A55 also. My manual has no reference to time-laps or interval for picture taking.
Also, for extended battery life in cold weather rig a chemical hand warmer to the outside of the battery compartment.

It may not be related to your camera, but here is a tethered shooting software site. The software is free to use, and works very well with my Nikon D700.
