Although the we are experiencing unduly cold weather this Spring the biological process of birds molting is well underway.
The process varies with various birds, but here's a few we've seen in the last few days
.
The Goldfinch is obvious.
The male Northern Cardinal is showing subtle changes.
The male Downy Woodpecker looks a bit disheveled.

My coat looks equally mangy after the use it had this winter, lol. Great shots, Pierre. Hoping they'll all look a lot brighter and cheery again as it warms up.

Is it ever going to end?????
We are enjoying 32f at the moment, but it is heavily overcast with wind. There are virtually no birds flying.
Earlier this week, driving to Toronto, we experienced blowing snow and about 20 feet visibility. What fun!!!
Thanks so much for the comment Randy.

Thanks so much John.
That's exactly what I try for. Some may not agree, but, that's the style I've resurrected now having been able to reinstall an old editing program. To each his own.

I have been bird-watching for less than a year, so am unfamiliar with the change of characters and their change of costume. It is interesting.
Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

WOW! Great closeups. How far away were you from the birds?

Thanks for the lovely comment.
An excellent source and authority on birds is All About Birds at Cornell University. It's free.
A handful of shooters on UHH really know their stuff and are very useful sources of information.
Again, thank you.

Hi Ellie
I so appreciate your visit and comment.
Our sitting room has swing out windows and we install branches about 15 feet away? The Goldfinch and Woodpecker were shot that way.
The Cardinal was about 25 feet away, in an bush, and was again thru' a window in the sitting room. I generally shoot with a 150-500 Sigma lens on a Nikon D7100 and always on a monopod.
Take care and have fun.

Well done and so enjoyable, PierreH. Love the woodpecker with his peanut. So darn cute! I know you and Sandra enjoy these little guys together which makes the time shared perfect. glad you arrived safely to Toronto.

Pierre, shouldn't Maine be getting birds before Ontario? We need a little tangible hope of spring here too. Your series is absolutely delightful, must be great to be outside finding signs of life again, now please send them down to me :)

Great shots, Pierre, all with beautiful pose! Hope the birds molting is a sign of better weather soon. Interesting, I saw all three birds you picture at our feeder today.
