"corporate welfare?" Wasn't that myth perpetrated by the same clowns that tried to pass off complaining because poor people didn't get any tax rebates?

Well without a doubt Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi, are poor states, but I think it would be interesting if they would also tie the demographics of those states in... or maybe take Social Security and Medicare spending out of those figures. Social Security and Medicare combined are larger than the discretionary spending of the federal budget, but as we all know we paid for these programs throughout our working lives so it hardly makes sense to use that spending as a way to try in insult those who would call for fiscal responsibility simply because a lot of people move to the south to retire...

As far as I am concerned, that is a meaningless statistic. Most of the 11 million people on Welfare and the 47 million on food stamps are democrats and republicans, Americans who work hard, believe in the dream, and just need a helping hand in times of trouble... trouble caused by our government in the new millennium... blowing money out the a$$ on unnecessary wars, retarded economic policies, pork, bank bailouts and such... The government has to take a lot of the blame for the increases in the dole.
What this statistic is good for is to shut up the idiotic point of view that our country is hurting because the liberals are lazy and they engender the vote of other lazy people (don't say minorities) by buying them off with payoffs. The system is broken... our leaders are lining their pocketbooks and while the right and left blame each other.

I think that maybe you missed my point, since the bulk of federal domestic spending is on Social Security and Medicare it would be interesting to see the demographics which would indicate percentage of retirees and elderly living in those states. I can tell you that there is a very large influx of retirees each year in the area in which I live, so my question is just how much of that money going to these red states is that type of spending? I concede that there are some very poor southern states that accept a lot of federal assistance, much of that has to do with the evolution of the once agrarian economies after the civil war. But my question still remains, what would that map look like without the spending on Social Security and Medicare, both already having been paid for by the payroll contributions of the beneficiaries.

my comment was directed at the title of the thread....as you pointed out with changing demographics, saying which states rely most on the government is pointless. Alaska is probably the least reliant... but they're sucking on the oil teat.

They all are,but they limit it to mere moments in time.
You have to know right from wrong when the moment happens.
