I live in a small rural community and would like to start a photography club. I would be interested in how other clubs got started and what activities you do as a group. I guess I'm looking for ideas to get this off the ground.

Here is a search result of topics on UHH using "camera club" as key words. I know there have been two topics in the past year with suggestions for photo challenges and the weekly/monthly meetings - very interesting stuff for when you get your group together. Hope it works out for you!

A Meet-Up group costs about $120/year to cover the group's page on the http://www.MeetUp.com website. I belong to five separate photography Meet-Up groups, so I can choose whichever weekend activity appeals to me. Each group has a different method of collecting 'dues' from members to pay for group website fee.

Caution, there is a monthly or annual fee involved.

I am Past President of a camera club. I found there are doers and dreamers.. Our camer club has 42- 50 members. We have guest speakers, table top shooting nights, model shooting meeting, slide shows by members, each meeting limited to 10-15 images. Field trips, Yearly photo contest.(B&W)

Our annual dues is $20.00, were meeting from September through June.
Once a month. Find a comfortable meeting location, try to fine the level of the members, professional, armatures, just starting and so on.

This is a good start.

You might go to the Boise Camera Club's web site and Facebook pages for some ideas. They are a member of PSA, which you might also find interesting.

DB, I belong to two camera clubs in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. They are quite different in their approach to photography, and appeal to different types of photographers. One club is the South Bay Camera Club (www.sbccphoto.org). You can check out our website and see much of what we do. Here's a synopsis: we meet twice a month in the meeting room of the local airport (for a fee, of course). One meeting each month, we have a local "expert" present a photographically related topic (this year, we have had Techniques of Printing at home; Posing Models; Shooting Macro; Using Lightroom, and so forth. The other meeting each month is a "critique" meeting, in which we have local professionals critique photos submitted by club members (max of 2 per meeting). One month is actual Prints, the other months they are digitally uploaded and presented via projector.
We have a member who researches and organizes local "day trip" shoots and another who does the same for multiday excursions. Latest was 4 days in Anza Borrega State Park with a park expert for a guide. For the past two years, we have had a month-long exhibit on display at El Camino College library which has been widely acclaimed. We do more, but you get the idea. Check out our web site.
The other club meets once per month, and sits around a huge table at a local community center. We do two main things each meeting. First, we go around the table and each member shares any photographic-related information, brochures, exhibits, etc. of which they are aware. Second go-around is when each member can share several photos (usually enlarged) with the group for peer critiquing. That's the main order of business. Periodically, someone will organize a shoot somewhere, but it's sporadic.
I realize this is a different demographic, but somewhere between the two extremes of these two, you should be able to find a starting point. First thing is probably to sit down and figure out what your goals are...social, improving skills, sharing, whatever. Our club appeals to newbies through professionals.
If you have further questions, I can be reached at compubob.king@gmail.com, too.

I started a club at our small church (HOTSHOTS) with a few people of all levels of experience-beginners thru semi-pro. We meet monthly for about an hour and we have a monthly photo challenge to complete. We occasionally do an outing together (trail walk etc.) and we also invite pros (for a fee) to teach us specifics such as portrait lighting. we have a great time.
Good Luck!

Try to Google Photo Clubs. It will bring up several so you can check them out. See how they are organized, see how and what they do, see how they market the club. It will be a great resource for you to get started.
Good Luck.
