I am willing to bet that if Putin makes such a move he will do it while Obummer is still president!

So what? We have bases all over the world.

Seriously, I don't like the idea.

But, really, there's nothing we can do.

I'm sick of this 'do as I say, not as I do' government that we have.

I'm not a foreign affairs expert but the notion of a Russian military base in the western hemisphere is horse shit. much less in Latin America.

He is referring to the Cuban Missile Crisis which occurred during the Kennedy administration. The fact is that Russia has been selling arms to Venezuela for some years now, there have been multi billion dollar arm sales and it would make sense that Russia would go further with the alliance especially if the US bolsters the missile defenses of the Baltic NATO members after having scratched that plan during Obama's first term. Iran also has arms factories in Venezuela and has had them there for some years, Venezuela hosts military from Iran, Cuba, and probably Russia. It takes little imagination to think that Putin would put Naval ships there, Maduro would certainly be a welcoming partner for Putin in this hemisphere.

Oh, I'm aware of the Cuban missile crisis but that was turned away. I don't believe there is a Russian base in the western hemisphere at this time and I don't think there will be one anytime soon. All of the noise coming out of Moscow now is just that. Noise. It's just Putin stirring the pot trying to be relevant. He is an opportunistic bastard I'll give you that.

Hey Geff, I know there are problems with some of our southern neighbors but I just don't see any of them getting that cozy with Russia, even Venezuela. Maduro's got enough problems without courting the ire of the US. Just my opinion though.

Here is an article that you may want to read, when Chavez died there was a real possibility that he would be replaced by a pro-western leader, the fact is that Maduro stole the elections and put his military on the streets to reinforce the theft. Maduro is a weaker leader than was Chavez and is the perfect puppet for the likes of Putin. The fears expressed by Moscow in this article were relieved when Maduro assumed power in Venezuela.

Here is more current news that better supports my thoughts.... the article is a bit long but here is an excerpt.

Quote:
While Nicolás Maduro was repressing student protestors, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced Moscow’s plans to install military bases in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, among five other non-Latin American countries.
