What do you do when your hose is broken?

Hi Everyone,

I have an expandable garden water hose. They were advertised on TV a while back, they don't seem to be around anymore. You know, they go from a few feet long to triple that length when the water is turned on. When the water is turned off they go back to their original length. I have a bad water leak between the hose and where it attaches to the plastic fitting that attaches to the water faucet. The hose is two hoses in one. The outer hose is a canvas like material that is capable of lengthening and an inner hose of rubber which is capable of stretching under water pressure. The diameter of the rubber hose is one quarter of an inch. I wasn't able to get anything to fix the hose at the local hardware store. Anyone have any suggestions?

...besides not buying anything off the TV, you're probably stuck getting a new one...do it work as advertised until it broke?

Consumer Reports says they work as advertised, but start leaking at the plastic fittings.

I know this is no help but my mother had one and it leaks. I guess that's why they're not advertised anymore. :(

Thanks for responding papaya nirvana, The hose worked very well until a knuckle dragging neighbor used it and gave it a tug.

I visited Kauai a few years ago. It's a beautiful island.

Since you've got nothing to lose, try finding a piece of pvc tubing that will fit the inner diameter long enough to span the leak - like a stent in an artery. Secure each end onthe outside with a hose clamp or wire tie. It'll restrict the short piece thats repaired but the rest should work! Good luck.

Thanks rocco, I am headed to the hardware store tomorrow. I'll see if they have tubing smaller than a quarter of an inch. I noticed, when I was there, that they sell an expanding hose. I can ask them about it and maybe get a guarantee if I buy one of their hoses. I like the hose, it's the leak that is driving me nuts.

I bought two of them at Home Depot and both failed in a week. Leaked and split lengthwise. I thought it may have been the 116 degree heat that caused the issues, at first. I Returned them and exchanged for two new ones. Kept them in the cabinet until it cooled down into the 80’s. One leaked the moment I turned on the faucet and the other lasted about a week then split. Too late to return so I chalked it up to experience.

They are worthless. The one you see advertised now as a heavy duty redesign is slightly better. My neighbor got 10 days out his before they began to leak badly. Great concept but extremely poor application. Stay clear is my advice.

Motorcycles and boats are not advertised on TV anymore either. Maybe, just maybe that is because people do not buy these things in the middle of winter! Wait til most of the country enjoys a spring thaw, then you will see things like hoses advertised on TV. The three hoses I bought only leak out of each end. They work as advertised.

Ok Smarty! I did call my mom and mentioned the hoses, she said she had several and all leaked. But, and this may be different than the OP's use, she used them in her greenhouse, not a commercial one, it's just a hobby but still I'm sure they got whipped around in there. The hoses are a good idea, especially yours that leaks from both ends. Happy gardening this Spring!

One source that may help you is from drip irrigation fittings. Drip irrigation for gardens use small tubing and they have fittings to go from a garden hose to small hose. I have seen it sold at times in garden centers like Walmart or Kmart have. The fittings can also be found on the web sites like ebay or specialty sites that deal in that type of services.
