Traveling light question

I am traveling light to Europe this fall.

I just bought the Nikon D3100 2 lens kit a couple weeks ago and relearning lost skills.

Now for my question: Which lens would be best for all around day-to-day shooting of stills?

If this has been covered, please forgive a newbie's ignorance.

EDIT:
Zoom is the AF-S 55-200 mm 1:4-5.6 G ED that I assume comes with all dual lens kits.

The other one is the standard AF-S 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED

What lenses did you buy? I own only 3. An 18-55(Nikon)...an 18-105(Nikon)...and a 70-300 (Sigma). Hardly use the 18-55...the 18-105 rarely leaves the body...and the Sigma is there when I need it. All depends on what you like to shoot, what you plan to shoot, and then what you wish you could shoot. Your "light" might be his/her "heavy", or not "heavy" enough.

I highly recommend the Tamron 18-270. The best all-in-one on the market.

Thanks, but I don't spend on spending more money. I am not cheap, but when I am not looking at anything I take my glasses off so I won't wear them out.

I prefer to call myself frugal.

I have been considering the Tamron 18-270, but think I will wait until the new 16-300 is available. What do you think?

First time I've heard about it. I just looked it up and it looks like a better one than the 270. Curios about the price. $700 maybe?

I would think the 18-55 would be used for around town shooting. It all depends on what you think you'll be doing.

I think the price is going to be in that range.

I think photon56 is leading you in the right direction. If your trip is about landmark locations and structures, you'll need the wider angle of the 18-55mm. You could always crop a little to improve framing if you find you have too much clutter in your image--but you can not add what is missing in the shot if you were using the long lens and couldn't step back far enough to get the scene in its entirety. Your choice of a D3100 is a very nice carry about weight for a DSLR. I have one and have really loved using it. Hope you have a great trip

He didn't ask which lens you have. He asked you to choose between the two lens he has.

I have exact same kit and took both lenses to Netherlands/Belgiam river cruise last March but used the 55-200 95% of the time. Weather was mostly rainy or damp and I didn't want to switch lenses so my 200 was on as carry around and just a few times did I have to back up to frame a shot. For an amature I was very satisfied with the results.

Thanks. I may take both as they fit in my case OK.

#1...Don't assume. Depending on where/when/stock available bought, "kits" will be different. With you being "frugal", a tough call...I can only envision both lenses being usefull.

Please note the time on my first reply, and in his initial unedited post, he only mentioned 2 lenses, not the sizes.
