RAW Files are approximately the number of megapixels in megabytes (D800, 36 Mpx, 36-40 Mb; D300, 12 Mpx, 12-15 Mb). TIFF files are roughly 3 times the size of Raw files (D800, ~100Mb, D300, ~35 Mb). JPEGs vary a lot but figure roughly one third to one half the number of Mpx (D800 ~12-15 Mb; D300 ~4-6 Mb). The actual size depends on a number of variables so these are not exact figures but a fair ballpark estimate.

I capture file size's well over 20mb with a D5100...I think it depends on how much detail is in the photo...I would guess a D800 could easily capture raw files well over 40mb.

D800 - 36.3 MP
D300 - 12.3 MP

Answer Image size is 3 times larger
File size ?

In my camera with image size of 10.8 MP, the file sizes vary but average 16 MB uncompressed.

My typical D800 lossless compressed 14 bit raw files are 45mb, uncompressed, 90mb. I shoot mostly highly detailed nature and urban landscape subjects.

So if you save a psd file with a few layers added, that must exceed two or three hundred MB.

Here is a quick snapshot of a portion of a directory containing D800 files. TIFF's are edited in PS, but the Nikon are RAW files.

To give you an indication .... with a 16gb card in my 300s I can take 1,400 jpeg at large fine .... the same card in my 800 will accommodate 475 pictures in jpeg large fine....

Here's another way of looking at it. With my D800, it took about 17 seconds for EACH image to download, while about 3 seconds(or less) for D90 images. Since I found this very frustrating, I sold my D800, and got a D7100 as a wonderful compromise....in part because of the 1.5 sensor factor which gives more effectiveness to telephoto images.

This is highly dependent on your computing power and method of downloading. Mine take much less time to download images through a USB3 or a thunderbolt port. I don't even store my images on board HD. I store and work with them on a thunderbolt connected drive, and there is no delay at all.

Tiffs are 3 times the size? Did you see the snapshot above?
