Wrong mount????
Its a Nikon F mount and will work just fine. Perhaps the issue is that the lens is an old manual focus Ai-S lens and you don't want to manually focus it? Nothing wrong with that, but it will indeed mount and shoot on your body. Just so you are aware.

I tried it and it always says lens not attached, so I was not able to take a picture with it!

It is a non-CPU type manual lens. You need to use it in Manual mode only. Simply set the cameras mode dial to M and you can use it same as it worked on the old film cameras when it was manufactured.

Oh wow! Thanks so much for that needed info!! I am taking a beginners class in Digital Photography right and we have only covered Aperture Priority as well as Shutter Speeds. I have always shot on Auto! I am now retired and now I have a lot of time to learn. Again thank you so much for you info and yes I do read the manual but I guess I overlooked Manual Mode altogether.

I have learned so much here on UHH and I am telling all my fellow classmates to logon to the site!!

Glad to help. That lens will FORCE you to learn the exposure triangle. Have fun.

The 50 1.8 series E is an excellent lens. I still have mine from way back in 1982.
