Well, I guess thats why I'm still here. Barely.
Last one out pull the rods and turn out the lights.

What coal plant do you work at?
Dirtpusher is a good name for a coal digger. Haa

Very nice. Good clean honest work.
Well, as long as you keep your cover-alls on.
I worked in natural gas plants before I came here.

Dirty, nasty and full of asbestos.
I'll take a little radiation any day. Haa.
Pick your poison.

I wonder if they walked to the plant or rode their bicycles to the plant or did they drive their gas guzzlers to the plant?

Right now in the USA, all spent nuclear fuel is being safely stored and the radiation is being safely contained. That had Ben the case for - oh, I dunno... a half century or so.

Yucca mountain is a perfectly viable site from a technical perspective. Safely disposing of nuclear waste is NOT a technical issues. It's strictly political.

Another perfectly acceptable and safe alternative is above ground dry cask storage. Those casks are so unbelievable strong it's amazing the abusive testing they have to go through before being certified.

In fact, in the USA, not a single person had ever been harmed or injured from spent nuclear fuel from commercial nuke plants. I can't speak for military applications as they work to a different set of rules. But by and large, nuclear power has PROVEN to be one of the safest forms of baseline power generation in the USA.

To the point of the article, what you must realize is that happened in France not at a plant here in the USA. I know absolutely nothing about security of French nuclear plants. I do know quite a bit about security of US nuke plants so I will talk to that and what might have happened if greenpeace tried that stunt here.

First, plants have an owner controlled area with a various degree of buildings, none of which contain any safety related equipment so they do t have to be protected as robustly as the plant itself. High profile structures like cooling towers are not as well guarded as, say, the reactor building, so it is quite possible for people to sneak up on a tower and unfurl a banner.

The owner controlled area is controlled similar to any other industrial facility except there likely will be highly trained roving armed security who have authority per federal law to use deadly force. Each plant is different as to how many there are.

Then there is the protected area. This is the area that has sophisticated intrusion detection equipment. There are barricades around those fences that will prevent very heavily loaded trucks from breaching.

So, our greenpeace friends would drive their vehicle on site and would have to ditch it far from the protected area. They would then have to run to the fence. They would be detected and they would already have numerous weapons aimed at them long before they were able to get past the first fence. The first couple would be shot dead and the rest would turn and run. If they were stupid and kept moving forward, they too would be shot dead.

As I said, there is a reason Greenpeace doesn't try those stunts over here. About the only thing they'd be able to accomplish without being shot dead is unfurling a banner on a cooling tower. However, as u said, while that might be a minor embarrassment to the utility, it wouldn't mean squat to anyone that actually knows anything about nuclear plant security.

To put it in layman's terms...many people have guns for home defense. If everyone sleeps upstairs, it would be a perfectly acceptable defensive plan to not go downstairs if someone broke into the house but to wait near the top of the stairs for someone to come into view and to shoot them at thy point. The fact that they can spray paint your front door or throw eggs at your house says absolutely NOTHING about your ability to defend what really matters. In this scenario, greenpeace unfurling a banner on a cooling tower would be like egging someone's house. Most rational people don't respond with deadly force when an egg is tossed at their house.

By the way, I've spent some time at SONGS which is where I assume redbeard works as that's the only NPP in southern CA. Shame they have to shut it down. It was a great plant to visit except for that evil climb up to the parking lot. LOL.

Yes, I will be at SONGS for another year.
What once was a small city is now like a ghost town.
Very sad indeed. I have had a good run. 30 years.
I'm 55. I need to work another 7 so I will be taking
the show on the road for awhile. Glad you enjoyed
your visit.

Not sure what your job there was/is but I'm sure it's transportable to other plants. Got any interest in one of the new AP1000s being built at Vogtle/VC Summer? Then there is also Watts Bar 2. After that, perhaps Bellafonte will be finished but the reconstitution of that plant is much more complicated because if several factors. To be honest, I've no idea if they are even going to complete Bellafonte after Watts Bar 2. I guess time will tell.

Anyhow, my point is that construction is picking up and there are plenty of opportunities. The NRC is also hiring...

I'm a valve mechanic. Most of the plants are looking for
I&C techs and electricians. Mechanical not so much.
I have a few friends at VC Summer and Palo Verde.
During outages They all have Valve groups that come
in and overhaul all the valves for them.

I'm looking at Crane Nuclear and Bartlet. They are both
hiring and I can come home in-between outages.
Not fun, but it's a living.

I'm guessing some of those plants will drop off.
Fracking has made natural gas so cheap that it
gonna be the popular way to go for now.

As soon as they figure out how to ship it over seas it
will go up in price though.. We'll see. I started in
gas fired plants. maybe I will go back to that if I
can stay in this area.

Stay tuned till next time for more of how the
stomach turns. haa. Thanks for the info.
All is appreciated,

You are just too damn stupid to understand the difference between a container for spent nuclear fuel and those for other wastes for me to even try to explain. Not a SINGLE one of those "examples" you post is in ANY way related to the safety of a spent nuclear fuel cask. But you've already demonstrated your ignorance in this area so why bother.

You also seem so fixated on my nuclear engineering degree that it seems obvious that your sorry, juvenile, and pathetic attempts at insulting me only go to prove your own insecurities with your own educational background. What is the matter? Ashamed you never finished 10th grade?
