The little brown truck delivered my camera. According to the receipt they replaced the shutter mechanism (again) and other associated parts. They also tested it thoroughly and made adjustments as needed. I'm glad to have it back. My turn around time to Melville was 14 days.
Hopefully I can close this nightmare chapter in my photography experiences book. Only time will tell.
Good Luck to the rest of the UHH Members waiting for theirs.

Had mine back for over 3 months now and 2000 clicks later, no problems. They did charge me $54 for the fix/service since my D600 was out of the original one year warranty. So far so good.

If I were you, in light of the shutter recall situation, I would write Nikon with a copy of your invoice and ask for reimbursement. What have you got to lose???

Thanks. Mine was "out of warranty" too. I feel they should have done this the first time though.

I would check on this. This is a statement from DPReview.

Reports have been surfacing that Nikon is issuing new D610 cameras to customers who send in their D600s for service. It's hard to substantiate, but Nikon Rumors has been collating reports from Europe and the US which seem to show that some customers who send their D600s in for service specifically related to the now notorious dust accumulation issue have been receiving brand new D610s in exchange.

We asked Nikon for a statement on this issue, and received an unusually quick reply:

'Nikon Inc., is committed to serving the needs of our customers. All our customer service inquiries are handled on a case-by-case basis.'

This typical non-committal statement doesn't confirm the truth of the reports, but crucially it doesn't deny them either.

'Case by case' is the important phrase here. We'd be very surprised if it was standard policy to replace dusty D600 bodies with D610s, but it's not impossible that if the problems with any given camera are so severe as to make conventional cleaning or repair uneconomical, a swap-out might make sense. And if a few customers get a nice surprise and tell their friends about it, well - so much the better for Nikon.

Here's a link to this statement on DPreview:

Here's a copy of the letter I got from Nikon (via email) re:D600 after I paid $54 to have it shipped and repaired

Nikon Inc. is contacting you regarding your D600 D-SLR camera, serial number 302xxxx. As you may be aware, Nikon Inc. recently issued a Technical Service Advisory regarding the Nikon D600 D-SLR camera. This Advisory related that some users of Nikon’s D600 D-SLR camera have reported the appearance of tiny spots on certain of their images. Not all users have experienced this issue. Nikon has thoroughly evaluated these reports and has determined that these spots are caused by dust particles which may become visible when the camera is used in certain circumstances and/or with certain settings. It is a well-known fact that the presence of dust particles cannot be completely avoided when using a D-SLR camera even after normal sensor cleaning procedures, because of a number of factors including components moving at high speeds when images are taken, the use of interchangeable lenses, and the different environments in which a D-SLR camera may be used. As part of its customer-service commitment, Nikon is providing a customer-service measure to reduce the potential impact of dust particles on images taken by its D600 D-SLR cameras.

The customer-service measure mentioned in this Advisory has already been performed on your D600 camera, serial number 302xxxx, which included the inspection, cleaning and replacement of the shutter assembly and related parts of your camera, during your camera’s recent service. In these circumstances, your D600 camera, serial number 302xxxx, is not affected by this Advisory, and it is not necessary for you to send this D600 camera to Nikon for this service.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused. Nikon remains committed to providing only the highest quality cameras and components, and we hope that you will continue to choose Nikon for your photography needs.

For more information regarding this matter, contact Nikon Customer Relations by phone at 1-800-Nikon US (1-800-645-6687), 9AM–8PM EST, Monday to Friday (closed certain holidays) or online here.

Sincerely,
Nikon Service

Could cost me a stamp but I wouldn't hold my breath on a refund.

Hi tramsey. That Rumor has been all over the net.
When I had a Nikon rep on the phone a couple weeks ago I asked if there was any truth to that rumor and I was told,"If an individual retailer wishes to replace the D600 with the D610 then that is solely at their discression. As of this time Nikon IS NOT offering any such replacement nor is Nikon exchanging the cameras for any kind of credit towards a D610 or any other merchandise."

A Rumor is only that! A Rumor! Personally, I'm glad I have my D600 back. I'm hoping the spot issue is resolved because I'm very satisfied with the rest of the cameras' performance. Time will tell. It's been back there twice now. If it has to go again, I will invoke the "Lemon Law."
Thanks, Don

They replaced it again? I wonder why. Maybe they have a better replacement now than they had when you sent it in earlier. That makes me think I should send mine in again. I just hate to be without it for a while for 2 or 3 weeks.

Good luck with the new replacement!

Thanks Cheryl, I forgot to mention that when I talked to the Nikon rep they stated that this was a better replacement than the previous replacement shutter mechanism. They wouldn't say for sure if it is the same shutter as the 610, but they said it was a much better replacement than the previous one. I guess you have to "read between the lines." Mine was a 14 day turn-around. Go to the Nikon site and set up a return. They'll spring for the shipping too.
Good Luck and let me know how you make out.
Don

Very good article, and I agree with the statement about camera makers offering too many different models.

Hi I was wondering if you can elaborate what was the shutter issue that you were having with the D600? I am currently having an issue with 2 dark corners appearing on my images. Trying to determine if the issue is with my D600 or my Nikon lens. Had sent the images to Nikon Support and they can not determine if it's the camera or lens that is causing the problem.

Although I never experienced the D600 sensor issue I took advantage of he service offered by Nikon and got my camera back in 8 days. All is well.
