Yes, altered photos are quite acceptable as there is much discussion here on PP (post processing). It's all about the artistry and this is quite a fine example. You have conveyed a message in picture that I feel helps me understand exactly what your minds' eye saw in the first place.

I like this. It says so much. I was at the moving wall. Such a sense of sadness and foreboding. It was hard to stand there for long.
