Does anyone use a camera holster and if so do you continue to use a over the shoulder strap. I keep looking for some idea to take the weight off my shoulders and neck when I'm walking around with a D800 and large lens.
I have the wrist strap on my 800 and it takes about 10 minutes to wear you out. I like the wrist strap for shooting but it is not good to carry. I'm thinking about one of those belt clips, I'm not sure but maybe Cotton Carrier makes them. I have to do something because the D800 is too heavy to carry around your neck and too heavy to carry with a wrist strap.
I have a Kata that fits my D600 with a grip and any of my lenses (see my signature area below) except the 70-200 and it works great on my waist or shoulder. ;)
I don't use a holster, I find them awkward, they make it hard to keep my pants up, and often depending on the lens I'm using (a Nikon 80-400) or the camera (a Nikon D3 for instance)the combination just doesn't fit properly.
I agree completely about the neck, five pounds or so around my neck all day in the bush is a real problem. And when I'm using two cameras, the D800 for macro, the D3 for wildlife, the neck complains constantly.
The only, and best, compromise I've managed to come up with has been a wide well padded shoulder strap. Using one for each hand and camera does the trick for me. I find the shoulders don't mind the weight that much.
The only problem I have with that solution is that I hang a camera on each side. So I have to be careful as I walk though the bush so that I don't bump a camera against a tree.

I also have a d800 with the 70-200mm and 24-70mm F2.8 lens yep they are heavy but the Think Tank holsters do a terrific job for me I use a belt and shoulder strap the belt really to stop the bag swinging about as I walk. The bag end is adjustable for the above lens so the pack is kept as small as possible. I do not trust straps that connect to the tripod screw they were never designed to be used that way then add 3 to 6 G as you bounce about a reciepe for disaster

I love my Cotton Carrier two-camera system. It takes the weight off the neck and puts it on the shoulders. The cameras are held securely against the chest and hip until easily released for use. If you're only carrying one camera, one of their one-camera harnesses should work very well for you, for either chest or hip carry. For a D800 and large lens, I'd recommend the chest-carry harness.

I been doing some research based on everyone's comments and I think a good combination would be a spider holster and a sling strap. I think this combination would spread the weight around my waist as well as having some security with the strap. I checked the Cotton Carrier and my one question is how hot can that get when walking around national parks and such. Any comments

I have not had a problem with heat when wearing the Cotton Carrier two-camera harness. It can be worn over a light short-sleeved shirt or even shirt-less.
Not so much fast draw as some good protection for your expensive camera and lens when walking / scrambling not found if all you have is a strap
