If you had a free day to shoot anywhere within a 2 1/2 hour radius of new York city, where would you go?

i would shoot in my own neighborhood; i know you said, "...radius of new york..."
i took a ride around my area yesterday and "saw" and shot several sights i've only seen a hundred times over.

I don't mean to be sarcastic only helpful but get a book from Bryan Peterson called 'How to See Creatively' After I read it I found so many things right in my own walking area that I had never seen before. It opens your eyes to things around you.

Have you guys considered that perhaps the OP is going to be in NYC for a period of time, and has a free day that he wants to spend somewhere around there?
My answer would somewhat depend on the time of year - between April and November I would probably go up Hudson on whatever scenic highways are close to the river.
During the winter, when the northeast is pretty fugly, I'd probably spend it in the biggest museum in NYC.

When the weather is fugly you are not supposed to be in New York. Although you could get some fugly pictures of the fugley.
One place you would never want to go to take pictures is Hunt's Point Market.
I'd shoot in and around NYC! Love it there!
Brooklyn Bridge and Park looking to Lower Manhattan
Thanks for the suggestions. I live in the NYC suburbs and am a busy professional (Wall street). I shoot locally all the time (see links below). I have a rare 36 hour window of time to myself - no family or work responsibilities - and have flexibility to travel a bit. I might stick around NYC but if anyone has some good ideas (beaches, lakes, waterfalls, piers, streams, hikes, vistas, parks, rivers, villages, etc) I could consider it.

Consider a ride down Route 25, on the North Shore of Long Island.
Wow, that's post card / canvas worthy! (The photo by ptcanon)!

Newport RI you could spend days there! Also there are many wonderful towns along the Connecticut shore, one of my favorites is Guilford exit 58 off of I 95 and head towards the shore, many old homes. Also Old Saybrook Ct. Northern Ct the town of Litchfield on Rt 202 and Rt63 is a Photographers dream, fall is Spectacular!
Thanks! I grew up in CT and these are good suggestions. I have been to Newport so I might give it a try.

One of my favorite spots in that area is Weehawken Park in New Jersey. It's the last exit before the Lincoln Tunnel. It did get a little scary at night though.

Olana is about 2 hours from NYC and provides lovely views of the Hudson river. It was designed by Fredick Church. The web site is

In Poughkeepsie, NY there is a railroad bridge that crosses several hundred feet above the river. It has been converted to a pedestrian walk. Spectacular views of the river and a great place to photograph the July 4th fireworks. Admission is charged. Don't have the website handy but Googling Poughkeepsie river bridge will bring it up, as I recall.
A little further north in Rhinebeck, NY is the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Air shows every Sat & Sun throughout the summer. Sunday is the better show, IMO. I used to perform there. Open cockpit plane rides are great photo ops. Definitely worth a visit. A little further north, a few minutes from my house, is Olana, as has already been mentioned. Beautiful site. At North Lake park in Haines Falls, NY you can walk out to the site of the old Mountain House for a beautiful view of the Hudson Valley. At Copake Falls, NY you can hike to Bash Bish Falls. Scenic in itself and I believe you can still hike up the rocks above the falls for some good shots.
