Hi Photo Hogs,
I have a D 800 and want to get the best wide angle lens mostly for landscapes. Price is a factor. Want to stay under $1000.
Please share your suggestions and experiences.
Thanks
Bill

I love my Nikkor 20 mm f/2.8, I'm more of a prime lens guy.

check out Tokina, their 11-16 f2.8 is wonderful, I'm sure they have an FX equivalent.

According to the late Ernst Hass the best wide angle lens is the one you have in your camera when you are out there shooting.

LOL, nice on LFingar.

On a more serious note; Bill, your question is unanswerable. What is a wide angle lens? It's one in which the FL (focal length) is substantially smaller than the FL of a normal lens; in your case that would be anything 35mm or less. I use WAs between 16mm and 40mm; which is the best FL? None of them and all of them, depends on the shot and where I can stand.

Given you budget restrictions, I think the obvious choice is the 18-35/3.5-4.5G ED, you can always sell and upgrade at some point.

If I were you, I would get an AIS 20mm or 24mm manual lens and be doing multi image panoramas in the portrait orientation. Samyang makes a nice 24mm F1.4 manual focus for about $600. Otherwise, maybe a used Zeiss off ebay .....

I have the Tamron SP 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 DiII, LD aspherical (IF) wide angle lens. I love it. Less distortion than the Nikon and less expensive.
Here's a review...

and here's a price...

And then I saw this site...

This might be helpful making your decision. Maybe the Tamron isn't the best choice, but I love what it does in my camera.

For wide angles in my digital life I use the Nikon f2.8 14-24mm zoom. That lens is amazing though a little beyond your budget. In my film days a wide angle for me was always a prime 24mm lens. One of those is within your budget.

But having used a prime and a zoom that is even wider, I learned a lesson too. I remember my elation when I got the 14-24, I thought finally I have a wide angle that will always meet my needs.

Well, it didn't work out like that at all. The lesson was that it doesn't matter how wide your lens goes, your subject is always just a bit wider than your capabilities after you keep stepping back and eventually hit a wall.

Having learned that lesson I don't worry about range too much any more. Instead I learned how to do panoramas using Photoshop. I simply take a series of images, in fact often with my 14-24mm lens, and then I stitch them together into a flawless image that has captured everything.

I'd still recommend that 14-24 if you can win a lottery and if you can't, some of the other recommendations work out well too. Just try to have a few dollars left over for Photoshop so that you can eventually also stitch together many images taken by the wide angle you selected when you're in situations where it's just not wide enough again.

$1000 doesn't buy the best I am afraid... You'll want to spend a bit more, but I promise you won't regret the lenses that will fall into that price category... especially if you want to be able to take advantage of what your D800 has to offer...

21mm Zeiss Distagon and a D800 combination will be breathtaking... about $1800. You won't be able to get a better combination.

At least that is what I have arrived at after exhaustive research. Meanwhile 25mm f2.8 Distagon is a consideration, At $1000, it will hold it value, will focus into about 4-6", and once I get my three through college, will be used as a trade in for the 21mm for my D800e. It is on my camera 95% of the time. While the 25mm is very good, the 21mm is among the very best. That's why I suggest it if you can swing it and a manual prime is something appealing to you.

BTW,I have gotten so used to the Prime Zeiss lens and manual focus , that I take my auto focus lenses off auto focus / aperture , and adjust manually. Drives me nuts when they do stuff on their own, usually focusing on a point I don't want!

Nice image riverlass although I could live with less of the tarmac.

Isn't that Tammy for a crop camera and therefore unsuitable.
