The crew was sopping up the suds in a tavern and and the youthful sailor had been observing the old salt with a peg-leg,eyepatch and hook for a hand. He finally got the courage to ask the veteran how he had lost his leg, hand and eye. The old one says: "We was boarded on one of our ventures and the other guy got the best of me and lopped of me hand at the wrist with a blow from his sword. I lost the leg when I fell overboard and before I could be pulled out, a great white bit me leg off at the knee. As for the eye, I was in the crow's nest looking for enemy ships when a large seagull went and dropped his business right in the eye!" The youth interrupted and asked: "And that's how you lost your eye?" "No," replied the old one "First day with me new hook!"
