It may be a face only a mother can love, but the image of the fiercly protective mother and her new chick captivated me.

This rates high on the impact scale, nice and sharp, great color, a fine composition, and what a neat find.

I totally agree with bushpilot.

Tack sharp, photoninjia. You have enough background blur to give your subjects some separation. This must have been a tight decision though, since you are focusing on 2 birds, not just one. I like how the trunks of the trees have more depth than the top branches behind the birds. You shot this at the perfect angle to give attention to the bird's head. The angle at which an image is shot can make or break it. You made it!

On which point? And why? Please give your own critique. We owe it to the OP in this section.

Thanks for your comments. I was fairly happy with it, but that isn't always a measure of success!

i would be giddy if I had shot this. My eye goes right to the adult then travels around the curved branches to the chick. As others have stated this is sharp and well composed, though I would be tempted to crop a little off the top maybe more to an 8 x 10 ratio.

My critique would be more of an emotional one. Cool picture of a chick I've never seen, yet.

Ninja, why did you not crop this tighter? Looks like too much post-process sharpening to me. Is that a feather coming out of the mom's head?

I like everything about this shot. It is sharp, the color and detail is perfect and just the right amount of blur in the background. Well done and thanks for the post.

Perhaps he agrees on all points and for the same reasons; if so, what else is there to say?

I believe the image is clean and clear and captures quite well the sense of motherhood that exists across almost all of nature's creatures. The focus is tack sharp, especially given that there are two subjects. As to the composition...I like it from left to right, but wonder if it might be improved by losing a bit of the headroom...

I did agree for all the same reasons (I am a She)

I didn't crop tighter because I wanted to show the environment and the aspect ratio fits my intended use, although cropping some off the top would make it a somewhat better composition (per C.M.'s suggestion). And, yes, that's a feather; common to the breed.

Thanks for the response. I am glad the cropping was by design rather than default.
