UHH Challenge - March 13-15 "The Ides of March" was a day in the Roman Calendar, which transfers to March 15th. The "Ides of March" is infamous from the Shakespearean Play. In it a soothsayer warns Caesar to "beware of the Ides of March". Caesar meets the soothsayer on the way to congress and jokes "the Ides have come", to which the soothsayer replied "But not gone". Caesar was assassinated shortly thereafter in 44 BC. That was the turning point in Roman history.

The Romans did not number their days of the month. Nones was 5-7, Ides 13-15 & Kalends was 1st. The Ides was determined by the full moon.

Ides of March also was the Feast of Anna Perena, goddess of the year, whose festival originally concluded the New Year ceremonies. Celebration among the common people with picnics, drinking & revelry.

In the later Imperial period, the Ides began a holy week of festivals.

So, with that background info you can pick your topic (death, celebrations, festivals, drama, full moon (which will not appear until 16th per my calendar). Here are some of my picks......I got a bit carried away with the Lent season here!

Well, the day I had planned to take pics this week was Tuesday, Mar 11. I got out of my French class and headed for my target location. Snow flurries. Have lunch, maybe it will ease off. No such luck. It is an up hill, down dale place with some nice possibles. But about 1/2 gravel road, 1/2 paved. Not a road to stop on with new snow.

So, here's last year.

& a wee bit early this year.

Ah, the Ides of March, Julius Caesar remembers it, especially March 15, which was his last one. Yes the Ides began then and spread out into sometimes parties and celebrations in honour of Anna Perenna among others.

Strange thing happen in March, always have since 44 B.C. and will continue I guess until who knows when.

Take for instance that storm which is coming up the East Coast today, March 12, which could cause many problems.

Here is an Ides story of my own.

If memory serves me right, it was about 11:15 on the morning of March 8, 1972 and I was busy assassinating an old and rusty frame on a ship which was being repaired. I shed a tear as I was cutting out the welds on each side of the frame which was eventually buried in a junkyard and was reincarnated many years later as bumper on my first truck. But like people who pass away and are incinerated, the frame also went that way, families dispose of the ashes as they please but I also picked up the now chilled molten steel which once kept the frame in place for life. It has a special place in the grotto right next to an empty beer bottle, ca. 1972 which serves as a headstone.

Good photo of your geese! Most of our Canadian Geese have left already, so ours are the smaller black geese now & not nearly as many as there have been. Hope that's a sign that Spring is around the corner! Had rain/snow combination here yesterday, but melted as it hit the ground. We really do need the moisture!

Gep! That's a good story & like the shapes in that frame (or what used to be a frame)! Friend of mine was boiling water in a pan & forgot it and it melted on the stovetop. She like the remains so much she entered it in an Art Show!!!!!

There are several water birds who have been 'wintering over'. Geese, black ducks, mallards, bowerings goldeneye are some of them.

& thank you

6:00 a.m. raining or sleeting, not sure which, but I can hear it, have flash freeze and heavy snow warning for this afternoon.

Looking back at mid March '13 again.

I haven't seen the geese in fields yet this year, but might Saturday, when we have melt.

I keep expecting farm in #2 to be photo worthy, but it hasn't again produced good colours.

Some snow and no leaves and you can see the bones.
