Looking for thoughts regarding polarizer usage. Also, would anyone use a 77mm with a step up on this lens?

That would need a 86->77mm step-down ring, so I would not do that. You would be costing yourself about a third of a stop of light just from the adapter ring, on top of the light the CPL takes.

Using an 86mm CPL does make sense if you are dealing with reflections and glare off surfaces like water and ice.

I always mix up the step up/down! I certainly don't want to lose an extra third of a stop of light. So I guess shooting animals and sporting events should be okay unless I'm in a glare situation, which should be fairly unlikely for me. I guess I was thinking that a little sky/cloud enhancement would be nice, but that should not be a real consideration for the compositions I'm anticipating. Thanks much,Amehta.

By the way, my wife will appreciate me not spending more! Not totally thrilled about the 85mm we talked about several weeks ago! We won't discuss the other three lenses. Enough is never enough!

There's just no pleasing some people. I plead the Fifth on who I am referring to. ;-)

Why? (I see you answered. I haven't found that need.)

No. It would vignette.

With animals you can't afford the loss of light with this lens.

Also it would be a pain to use with the ginormous hood.

Sometimes it is easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. Especially when you are buying new toys.

As for using a smaller size filter than the filter thread size on the lens, you are more likely to get away with it with it on a telephoto lens than on a wide angle lens. I suggest you measure the diameter of the front element of the lens. If it is less than 77 mm you will always get some vignetting. IF the front element is greater than 77 mm, it might be worth the relatively low cost of a step down ring as an experiment to see how it works.

Dave, this is probably a stupid question since it's not been mentioned, but I guess that Sig will not take a drop-in? Plus, I guess, that would cost half as much as the lens. ;-)

The important piece of information missing here is how you use the lens. I would presume you want it for sports or wildlife. One does not normally think of this lens for landscapes or architecture. If I am correct, then I would say save your money because it is basically useless for such photography.

First point: after 43 years and several hobbies, the forgiveness option is the valid choice.
Second point: sounds like an option, seeing as I have a nice 77mm B+W cpl. Thank-you for your thoughts.

The lens is due in today, so I'm a babe in the woods. Appreciate your thoughts!
