Hello house?
I heed help. Iv been battling with the descission on what lens to buy next.
I have a 5Dc and 24-105mm f4, 50mm f1.8, 75-300 f4-5.6
I shoot mostly weddings and portraits. I do alittle of nature also.
Im thinkin of getting a prime lens considering 135mm or 85mm 1.8.
What do you think and ple give reasons for your prefference. Thanks....

I own a 135mm F2 and an 85mm F1.8. In the past year I doubt I have used the 135 more than 2 or 3 times, while the 85 is always with me and gets used a lot. Great portrait focal length.

I would go for the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8. This lens is great for portraits and weddings. Since I got my 70-200mm, my 70-300mm just collects dust.

I agree that the 85mm prime is also a great lens to have. I would tend to lean towards the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens over the 85mm lens. The macro lens is great for close-ups of the wedding rings and such.

Thanks alot.
I considered the 100mm also but that sem to be narro for me on fullframe. I have ext.tubes though which i use for the extreme closeups.
70-200 f.2.8 is actually a great lens bt its wayyy beyond my budget

When you look at the shots you take with the 2 zoom lenses, at what focal length(s) do most of your pictures seem to end up?

If you are taking more 85mm than 135mm, maybe the 85mm would be the best choice. Or, you might find out it's closer to 35mm. The best teacher is your own experience.

I know you want a prime lens but don't discount the 70-200 f2.8. It is a great lens.

The 85mm lens is very useful on a full-frame camera. I've probably taken over 60% of my pictures in the past 2 years with it.

85mm f1.8 would get my vote. Excellent lens, excellent focal length.

Sigma EX lenses are quite good, and DxOMark rates it significantly higher than the Canon 85mm f/1.8 (link).

Are these designated as the "Art" series?

The "Art" series is in even "higher" quality level on Sigma's scale, designated with "A" instead of "EX".

I think Sigma wins the performance competion pretty well. However, they are lenses at different price points.

For the price, the Canon is the better value.

If you enjoy shooting weddings, suggest the 100mm macro. Good for portraits, ring shots, etc. Best of both worlds, but shallow depth of field.

While macro lenses can do double duty, remember that they are designed primarily for close focusing.... I'd go with the 85mm lens myself (& I have an 85mm, but in Nikon mount & have several macro lenses, but use them strictly for macro)
