I was out looking for BIF yesterday and this flew over my house. I did not know they performed this at lower altitudes.

Sometimes they have to make a slow decent to maintain speed.

That makes total sense. I just have never seen this other than in movies.

Air refueling usually takes place at altitudes from 24,000 to 28,000ft....give or take. If they were refueling at such a low altitude that you could get a photo, they were doing something different. I've had to refuel in a gradual decent, but I had 1 engine out at the time. Keep in mind that I was flying what would now be considered an antique aircraft.

It's exciting. I had the honor to take a pr flight when teaching at Grissom AFB (it was primarily a refueling base). We went up in a KC 135 on a refueling training mission, and it was awesome. We each had a turn at riding in the cockpit, AND at riding in the tail with the refueler during an actual refueling. I had a 135mm lens on my camera, and I could read the name of the pilot of the plane being refueled. The only way to get in there with the refueler was to lie on your stomach. I could go on and on, but readers would get bored. Unfortunately, I have lost those negatives or I wold post some of the photos.

Looks like one tanker refueling another. Practice?

"Keep your eye on the horizon... see that black line?"
I saw it and then it disappeared.
"Those were power lines"

In about 1964 I took a geology class in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. One of my classmates was a Lt. Col who, earlier in his career, had been the personal pilot of General Curtis Lemay. One night he showed us his 50 second 8mm film of a flight through the Grand Canyon in a B47.

I've looked for it on the Web but with no success. I wish I could remember the guy's name.
