2201 - Gimp Layering Question

I am trying to place a sharp image from one photo on a fuzzy photo making it look like the sharp image is floating in air. I am working in GIMP and am way over my head. I think the route I need to take is layering. I am having trouble getting the general idea of layering, and I am having trouble lifting the object I want out of one photo so that it can be placed on the fuzzy photo. I can make the selection, sort of, by selecting by color, but I know so little about layering or even photo editing that I am at a loss beyond that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dirtpusher, thanks for the links. Now I have a new problem. I have lost the layer dialog box. How can I find it. I have gotten out of GIMP and back in several times, but I can't find it. At first it came up every time without me doing anything.
