Trip across country

This Spring, I am going on a cross country drive from Chicago to San Francisco to see my granddaughter as well as my son and daughter-in-law, then to LA, via the coast highway, to see my twin brother. Since I am retired, there is no real time frame, but it can't be 5 years. I would like some recommendations as to where I should stop for photos. Right now I would like to see Mnt Rushmore and Yosemite N.P. After leaving LA, I was contemplating Route 66 back to the Midwest. I know this would allow me to go the the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest.
Would like to know what any of you would recommend as far as diversions go. Thanks in advance. :D

I enjoyed Zion NP in southern Utah. It is very photogenic. Of course, I was there so long ago that you could still drive your personal vehicle. I think you have to go on their tour bus now.

I've been working on that for 10 years in a motorhome. At 100,000 miles, my wife and I are not done yet.
Read up on the National Scenic Byways: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/byways/
You can also avoid the interstates and travel on the older US Highways. Sometimes they are called "blue roads" because so many maps color them blue. They will take you through all the wonderful old towns.

You might check out www.photographamerica.com. They have detailed maps and descriptions of photographic spots all across the country. You can purchase specific map downloads for the areas you are considering. These have annotations and directions on specific spots along the road that offer good phtographic scenes. if you belong to triple A you can go to any of there offices and have them map it out for you and get maps and tour books free. there is a book called Photosecrets San Francisco & Northern California by Andrew Hudson that is great for that whole area in Calif.the price new is $17.00 used about $10.00.it also covers Yosemite.Readers Digest also has a book called On the Road USA that covers both the East West Routes and the North South Routes both are great.

There's so much to see in Utah .. many National Parks. Don't miss the Arches - a photographer's delight. YellowStone and Grand Teton is another bucket list item so is the Lake Tahoe area while in Calif.
