Folks, here are some owls that the gracious Park Rangers at Reelfoot Lake brought out for us to photograph. These are all recuperating from injuries of some sort. Sadly the last owl in the set is a young screech owl that was hit by a car. The vet seems to think it may never be able to live in the wild again.

Compelling shots, James. Number three certainly tells a sad story.

Indeed very sad John, the ranger told us that the vet said it was showing signs of brain damage. It may not be able to recover enough to forage on it's own and may not fully understand how to keep itself safe from predictors.

Yes Jean...the park rangers were a great bunch. They knew we wanted photogenic shots, so the birds were placed on perches or in the case of the last one...inside a hole in a tree.

Superb, Bird Man. So sad about the juvenile. Most birds and animals don't benefit from contact with humans and our machines. Hope he can recover.

Ha..Yea quite a change from the little Chickadees and Titmouse I was shooting last week. Had a blast though. It was kinda sad about the little owl...but the little guy is being taken care of. He'll be a favorite for all the grade school kids to see when they visit the center.
