I took this at Shiprock yesterday. I am new to UHH and photography, I have a Canon G12 Camera. This was on automatic and had to zoom in. Couldn't get near the "rock" because I was in car instead of 4 wheel drive. A beautiful day in New Mexico.
You can return to this location the rest of your life
and find something new every time, good work. Bv
I can see Shiprock from where I live in Farmington. It never looks the same!
don't know what photo editing program you are working with, but most have a saturation tool. you might try saturating the color - bring out the reds - make it really pop! this photo has some great potential. Also, is this cropped? if it is - you might try adding in a tiny bit more sky & a little less forground. i'd also take the "rock" a little off the center. but great job, especially from a car!
I have only gimp for editing and not real familiar with it yet. I didn't crop at all. Would like to see what you could do with the picture.
Ok I saturated the color on gimp and cropped. I do realize that I need more sky on top of the "rock".

wow! that looks a thousand times better! keep working. Gimp is a really tough tool. Try downloading Picasa or Photoscape - they're both free & have lots of fun & good options.
ok - try this one

very nice. Being a tony hillerman fan, its nice to see something fromhis books! gimp is very difficult to master, itss basically a ripoff of photoshop without the support. try piccasa, or if you go to amazon.com you can findolder versions of photoshop elements real cheap.
Thanks Natalie good suggestions. Also will try the other editing programs.

Have a shot from same place. The road ??? is not for driving. I shot on slide film and rock is not red. Good org. shot.

I am soooooo novice but couldn't resist a try at your marvelous photo. I have this thing for "straightening" photos but as soon as I did, I lost the top of your photo. But I did put some red in it.

Not sure if the rock is red in real life or not. I punched up the contrast & definition a bit with Nik Viveza.

Easiest part was adding sky at top, had trouble getting it level but came close. How do you like this?
Those who have processed Shiprock playing with saturation, contrast and sharpness run a terrible risk of a curse cast down from the owners, the Navajo Nation. Your only salvation is to climb the Rock bearing a gift of fry bread and honey.
The original shot by nmjan is pretty close in colour (though a touch of vibrance would help). Amazingly clear for what looks like a mid day shot at a considerable distance.
Perhaps you might shoot another from the hiway on a hot summer afternoon so we cab see why it is named 'Shiprock'.
Drove by this back in June last year (2011) on our trip we took. We drove from southern Illinois to Sedona AZ. ,Then north all the way to Glacier N.P. Montana then back to Illinois. WOW! Saw some beautiful country!
You can see it for miles before you get to it. Snapped a few photos myself.
