I've had a camera converted to infrared, a Canon EOS 40D. It was a while ago and have not used it for a while because I've been busy with other things. Could someone remind me how to get a correct custom white balance. I believe it was green that I had to shoot but what green?

I think you just shoot a patch of green grass. Even though plants will reflect IR differently (like IR "colors" so to speak), it should get you close.

I expect to get my D70 back from LifePixel today. Now if the snow melts off the grass, I'll be all set.

Have fun, are you going to be converting to black and white or use the false color?

Mostly color. I'm sure there will be a steep learning curve in Photoshop to get them to look decent. There are enough tutorials online, so I'll figure it out.

Just be aware, find images made with the same camera as the sensor effects the color shifts.

Life pixel has some basic information on their site.

The learning curve isn't that hard, have fun. It is a new way of thinking.

Green grass works well.

I've started an IR thread here:

Come join us and what other people are shooting in IR, we might be able to help you with other IR questions as well. In addition to the photos there are some informative links too.

Looking forward to some IR images from you soon,

Eric

This time of year, It was hard to find grass good enough for the camera to accept. I kept getting "NO GOOD" in the display.

Now that it is set as a WB Pref, how long will it keep that setting? I'm assuming I can't shoot in Auto and get the Pref setting.

I don't know anything about the D70, maybe check the manual under 'Custom White Balance' or something like that.

I'll have to learn by experience how long the WB Pref lasts.

You might start a new thread titled, "How long does a D70 hold a custom WB setting," or something like that. I bet you would get a bunch of helpful replies. You might even find a way to save that setting and go back to it when you want.

I dunno, DSLR's are complicated and expensive.
