My grandson has a Nikon D50. From what he tells me, the D50 will only use 1 or 2 gig sd cards. Is this a fact?

Yes, I believe so. The NikonUSA page lists only "SD" as storage media for the D50, while the D5300 lists "SD, SDHC, SDXC". SD cards are limited to 2GB, SDHC to 32MB, and SDXC are bigger.

With just a little over 6 megapixels you don't need a much bigger card. - Dave

The D50 accepts all "SD" cards, but it will NOT accept SDHC cards. SD cards are limited to 2GB in capacity so yes, that is the largest card the D50 will accept.
