Hi! And now...a little about me. I'm a 72 year old retired controls engineer and technical trainer. When I retired 9 years ago, I got a Canon S3IS which I've put to good use. However, when my wife told me we're going to Alaska for our 50th anniversary next year, I began to think I should upgrade my camera. So lately been doing a lot of research, esp. on mirrorless cameras. Then last week, a friend recommended the Canon SX50 which looks interesting. So I'll be looking throughout this forum for your comments, suggestions, etc.

Welcome to our little slice of insanity. If you use the search function at the top of the Home Page, you'll find tons of info and photos from the SX50.

Welcome, Grampy. Several UHH members use that camera and post a lot of good wildlife shots, and other shots, too, taken with it. Most people that have it seem quite happy with it.

Welcome to UHH.

Do you need 50x Zoom? I guess like me your hands are not as steady these days, without a tripod pictures at zoom more that 4x tend to be blurred by hand trembling.
You might also consider a good used Canon t3i. a better camera in my opinion and cost about the same though it doesn't have zoom.

Welcome to the Hog, Grampy. You will have lots of photo ops there and will want to cover your bases between 24 - 2 to 300mm. Good luck with your search. A SX50 will definately fill that bill. ;)
