I think the move to SD cards was more of a real estate issue. Two SDs, like in my D7000, take up less valuable interior space than a CF card. Manufacturers are cramming more features into cameras, and all this takes up interior space.

Why did the Nikon D90 stick around for such a long time?

There isn't really a good answer for that, except to keep the D300s company. The Nikon D300s and the Canon 7D were their flagship APS-C cameras, and Nikon seems to have labeled the D7100 that while Canon seems to be ready to make a 7D Mark II. Meanwhile, the Nikon D610 and Canon 6D have taken the $1800-2000 price point, where the D300s used to be. Nikon has let quite a few models stick around while their apparent replacements were also available.

With compact point & shoot cameras, this is an even bigger factor.

One thing not mentioned in the train of comment about memory cards is price. SD tends to be less expensive than CF. For instance a 32GB SD is $33, a 32GB CF is $85, both Sandisk Extreme version. If I were in the market for a camera, I would be buying one with SD or both SD and CF. I happen to have a camera with both, and am very happy with it. I actually buy the Extreme Pro versions, both 64 gb. I have never run out of space during a shot, the 64 GB holds over 1600 shots in RAW (25mb each). If you had a Nikon D800, you might want to get two memory cards as you will only get 1/3 the number of shots. In jpeg, with the same camera, you can expect about 2.5 times as many shots GB.

Yea, maybe pretty soon they'll be moving to micro-SD cards - then watch the complaints coming in about dropping the card and being to find it back

The CF cards can be faster and/or higher capacity than SD cards.

Currently, both seem to max out at 256GB, but the SD cards are 90MB/s read and 45MB/s write, while the CF cards are about 150MB/s for both read and write.

If a pro sports photographer is shooting with a 15-20mp camera and 10 frame/sec, the raw files are being generated at a rate of about 200MB/s.

Not only do memory cards read and write at different speeds, so do cameras.
Considering the difference in price in the card of different write speeds, I'd suggest to check your camera's manual to find what cards are suitable for your camera.

So is it safe to say that the CF card is a better performance card?

I would say it's safe to say that because that's not the type of topic that's likely to start a physical confrontation. :D

As for a CF card being superior to an SD card, that would be getting into the hair-splitting area. It's like asking what's faster, a Ferrari or a Lamborghini? It really doesn't matter.

CF cards came first, so they appeared first in professional cameras and are still used in them. For this reason, people tend to think of CFs being better because they are used in professional cameras.

As far as taking good pictures goes, SD vs CF doesn't even enter into the equation.

Why do some cameras take a CF card and others a SD card? Does it have something to do with the performance of the different cards or what? Thank You.

The CF card came out first. Later the SD card came. The SD card is just as fast as th CF card providing you buy the larger Number, say a # 10. The SD card is much more durable I beleive. In earlier test a car was rolled over a SD card with no damage. A CF card didn't fare so well, not that we would do that. The Contacts on a SD card are far better than those on the CF card. The only problem is because of their size, the're easier to lose.

Yes, I know we have them. I have one in my tablet as well. It is in there permanently, only 5% full so far.

My point was, that pretty soon, to save real estate inside a camera, they'll start using micro SD cards in cameras.
If you drop one of those little suckers, especially if you're on a dark floor, try and find it back!!!
When I dropped a CF card in an auditorium with the house lights on, I had enough trouble, because I didn't see what direction that one "jumped" away - compare a CF and a mSD for size...

No it's not. Cf cards are on their way out. SD cards are smaller and faster

They need to put a steel metal strip on them so you can find them with a magnet. :) :) :)
