I am considering Nikon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 ED VR or Nikon 24-85 f/2.8-4.0 D or Nikon 24-70 f/2.8. The 24-70 is by far the most expensive and it does have 2.8 through the range, but is their much difference between f/2.8 and 3.5 and 4.0?

Here is an option. Find a used Nikon 35-70mm f2.8D for about $300-350. It is an older but sharp and "beefy" lens. You lose some on the wide end but you can use it for a while and see if a constant 2.8 makes a difference for you. I have both the 35-70 and the 24-70 f2.8s. I still use the 35-70 if weight is a factor. It is still a heavy lens but not as big and bulky as the 24-70.

Excellent suggestion for someone on a budget. A very good lens.

I've got both the older F3.5 manual focus lens (72mm filters) & the AF 62mm version... I use a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 to get more coverage on my DX format cameras...

the f/2.8 also gives you more depth of field control. That can be important when taking outdoor portraits, etc.

Everyone will tell you what lens is their favorite. Serious photo people will all say the Nikon 24-70 is the lens to buy WITHOUT QUESTION. Don't think so much "Just do it "

Ah, but not everyone has the funds for such a lens. Plus, not everyone wants the weight & bulk of it... If it really was the "best" then everyone would own one... We all have different needs...

Maybe true but if you want it bad enough you'll find a way. It's worth it.

When my bride catches on that I have a new lens, I always remember that it is much more rewarding to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
