Thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return . . .
First post in this particular group. I am a Catholic Priest and member of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits) in which I recently pronounced final vows.
Last year I celebrated one of the two Ash Wednesday Masses in our large (85 man) community just outside of Boston. AFterwards I took photos of the ashes and the holy water used to bless them as part of the ritual. Converted to b&w because the combination of the light and the finish on the table resulted in a very orange effect.
The 'brush' is used to sprinkle the water.

I enjoyed your posts, especially #1, nice composition and good tonal range for B&W. Where do the ashes come from?

Thanks. The ashes come from the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday. They are burned to a fairly fine powder though at times there are some rather large pieces mixed in. The palms arrive green and flexible just before Palm Sunday. Within a few months they become dry and very brittle. They burn very easily then. It takes a few Washington to get the ashes from the thumb print.
Thank you. I never knew and never asked before.

Your welcome. I tried to write it takes a few washings to get the ashes from the thumb after imposing a few hundred ashes and auto fill changed it to Washington.
