In my county (Suffolk) there is great encouragement to keep churches open, at least during the day time. Many have suffered from vandalism and theft in the recent past, but hopefully that phase has past.
Cathedrals are open daily, so here two contrasting shots from two reasonably local cathedrals.

Peterborough was my first outing with a new camera & fisheye lens. Pleased with this result.

fantastic images. love the perspective in #1 and the lighting and unusual composition in #2. What does "church crawling" refer to?
Carlysue, sorry for the tardy reply,
a "church crawl" is just a day out visiting churches - simply going from church to church. (Hopefully finding them unlocked). [some of our younger menfolk go on "pub crawls!!]
The Church of England (USA equiv. is Episcopalian) is split into geographical diocese. My diocese - St Edmundsbury & Ipswich - was formed 100 years ago this year, and and its geographical boundary is approx the same as the county of Suffolk. Within this diocese there are 478 parish (C.of E.) churches of which over 400 can trace themselves back to Medieval dates (say pre 1300), so we have many quite old church buildings. A good "church crawl" would probably mean visiting 5 or so rural parish churches in a day if you need time for the photo opportunities as well. For instance, below is a picture taken in a little rural village church where the current population will be no more than 500. Though not all our parish churches are so extravagantly adorned !!

Ok, makes sense to me. I am amazed at the age of the churches and the adornments and how well they are maintained. Nothing here is that old, kept up, or kept from plumage it seems.
