My dad was an Air Traffic Controller in the US for many years. It's not for everyone.

And to think on 9/11 they got every single one over the U.S.A. grounded in minutes.

Well, don't forget, the scale there is horribly off by a factor of about 1000. If you actually plotted planes on a map that size, they'd be about 1/100th the diameter of a hair.
Yeah, there are a lot of planes up there. But there's a lot of sky, too.

Factor in the fact that the yellow planes are live time but the orange ones are on a delay. Which in fairness, reduces the congestion somewhat.
Spectacular all the same.
I use Flightradar24 & at most times I open up, there are 4 to 5 thousand planes airborne live globally. I often marvel that some of them don't bump into one another. Very thick over Europe also. The orange/delayed icons are seemingly over USA. Maybe paranoia since 911?
Fantastic site. There is another site which shows more planes. Mainly because they include small aircraft too. The site is PFHD free.
Here's the link to the actual website:

I was an air traffic controller in the Air Force. Since I was in the radar section, we sat in a darkened room and plotted little green blobs of light across our radar screens. Wasn't quite as exciting as being in a tall tower and seeing actual airplanes on the ground and in the air.

You also have to bear in mind that a 2D image, doesn't take height into account.

For the aero enthusiasts, the Flight Radar 24 site is great. You can track a flights path, altitude, speed etc from take off to landing.
If you are expecting someone arriving from some place, it's great for coordinating pick up or even just knowing what's coming if you're a plane spotter.
For the maritime inclined there is a similar site for ships of many kinds. It's called Marine Traffic. Ships all over the world & their stats.
I am frightened at the prospect of flying automobiles. don't we have enough accidents in two dimensions w/o adding a 3rd dimension?
