An interview with DavidT,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been doing photography for about 40 years, off and on.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
An striking image that elicits an emotional response.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? I used a Panasonic Lumix GX-7 camera with a 25mm (50mm equivalent) lens. I got up on a ladder, and had my wife walk through the snow in our backyard. She used to work for an insurance company and she still had a huge, red Traveler's umbrella (I used a pun in the title).

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I don't do much PP. In this case, I added some darkness to the footprints to contrast them with the snow.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I remembered an image, taken years ago, of a Japanese geisha with a red umbrella and how that red umbrella just stood out in the picture.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I wish it were snowing harder or the sun were shining in a blue sky.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
To understand how photos impact people differently.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
It depends on the situation. In the studio, the lighting and background are the most important accessories.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I do mostly product (jewelry) shots, and 90% of the time I use a Canon 90mm tilt-shift lens; often with an extension tube.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I have too many flashes, but rarely use them. In the studio, I always use continuous lighting (tungsten).

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Probably eat too much and watch too much TV.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Not nearly as funny as those I read about on UHH.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Maybe one day I will set up a website. At this time, I do photography because I enjoy it; not to sell or promote my pictures.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I enjoy the Weekly Photo Challenge and very much appreciate the effort you put into it. It's always interesting to see how my pictures rate. Sometimes, I get no votes; sometimes I win. But, I enjoy the challenge of trying to shoot an image for that week's theme.

An interview with Gary K,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been interested in photography for about 55 years.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have had no training in photography.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I try to keep the subject simple without clutter or distractions.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Can you walk us through it? Taking a photograph of a building requires no special setup. I just look for the best angle and available light to frame the subject.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Most pictures benefit from even some minor post process adjustments. I look any eye distracting clutter, even small stuff, and try to neutralize it. Next I look at lighting and contrast. Then I crop the picture to desired size or ratio that best frames the subject.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
The Old Red Church was an easy subject for me. I've photographed it many times over the years. Autumn is the best, but winter time is a close second place.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I can’t see anything I would change in the photograph I submitted, but I’m sure I will try again and again to capture the perfect picture.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Take a few common, but historical, pictures along the way. You don’t know what is lost to progress until it’s gone.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
When you shoot a Nikon P100, the only accessory you need is a tripod. It may not be the greatest camera, but it gets the job done.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
If I had only one lens, I would want a zoom lens (50mm to 200mm) with some macro capability.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Lighting is an important issue, but a Nikon P100 has only a built-in flash. I work with what I have.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I couldn't do photography, I would paint. Fortunately I now do both.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I once took a bunch of vacation pictures, and later realized I forgot to put film in the camera. Fortunately my wife had her little camera. Everything worked out fine.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
No – At least for now, I just submit to UglyHedgehog. Every week I look forward to having a new photography assignment.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Photography is much more than trying to get that great picture. It’s more about having a purpose to get out and really seeing the beauty and just maybe capture a little piece it.
