Another reason that I don't read the Almanac. I breath slow and shallow, and I can stop hiccups before the third hiccup. Different techniques work for different people. For some people, nothing works.

My dogs hiccup occasionally, and they stop without panting.

Then there's always the old trick of putting a knife in a glass of water then, with the handle end of the knife touching your forehead, try to drink the water without spilling it. Your concentration on trying not to spill any water will make you forget that you have hiccups.

If you want maximum concentration, try putting the knife with the point on your forehead. :D

It was a misprint - they meant to say "paint" like a dog! My dogs just laughed.

My dogs "fingerpaint," but they do it only when I'm painting something in the house. They find a way to get the paint on their paws. I learned to use latex exclusively.

Finally someone else who's heard of this cure. I have never had it fail to work.

I believe that it was Walt Kelly who suggested that if you put your head in a bucket of water three times and pull it out twice your hiccups will go away.

Man walks into a bar, asks the bartender, "What do you do for hiccups?"
Bartender picks up a wet bar rag and whaps the man a couple of times and says, "See, your hiccups are gone."
Man say, "No, Dummy, its my wife out in the car!"

I used to tell my students to hold their breath and count very slowly to 10 000.

One of my students told me that pulling the earlobes works.
It does work ... sometimes!

By the time someone tries all of these cures, the hiccups will have stopped on their own. :D

I have cured peoples hiccups with this procedure;
You must tell the person, “I can cure your hiccups!”
Then ask for the persons right hand, then with your right hand very gently place your fingernail from the little finger of your right hand under the fingernail of their little finger. Surprisingly, most of the time their hiccups stop.
Power of suggestion, I guess. Who knows? Try it!
I learned this from an American Indian but he wasn't old, just a young one.
