This is going to sound tremendously sexist. But it's really not meant to be. The winter olympics. Curling. Is it just me or is it just sweeping up? And how come you only see women doing it? Sorry for any offence.

You must have just turned it on during women's competition, but it's men, too. I was curious to know how widespread curling was. The only curling club I ever saw was in Canada. Dang, they're all over the place. There's even one here in Dallas.

Steve: I can honestly say that the only coverage we get here from curling, is the women's team. I didn't even know that there were men's curling teams.

I just made that comment, turned on the TV and what's the first thing to come on? A report about the men's curling team. Just ignore everything I say from now on.

Do you know why they "sweep"? It is because it warms the ice a bit and there is less friction, so it moves a little faster! This info is directly from an interview with one of the curlers.

I thought it was to remove miniscule debris out of the path.

Curling ice is pebbled meaning when the ice freezes it creates tiny bumps on the ice not smooth like hockey ice. When the curlers sweep like they do they are basically melting the down the tiny bumps on the ice and that in turn shapes the rock in the direction they want it to move.

It is lazy bowling...and can't get much lazier then that. I'm still miffed about how it is scored.

It is!!! it's the combination of sport and housework, especially for the ladies.

Fortunately, we only have to watch it for about 20 minutes every four years!!

Thats right Wendy it also allows the stones to move left or right when making the shot.

You seem to have succumbed to the UHH disease of looking at a 10 x 10 pixel scrap and deducing the whole picture! I've been glued to the box watching both men and women curling (and sweeping) for the last few days. And like Steve Cram said "it's not the same as chess on ice - at least a pawn won't miss the square he's aiming for."
