How to? From film to computer

While I continue to shoot both film and digital, I don't know the best way to get my film on my computer. Is it good enough to just get a cd when the film is processed, or should I have the negatives scanned? If scanning is best, any recommendations for a scanner. Thanks.

It is probably easiest to have the CD made when you process the film. But, the quality would be highly variable depending on who the lab is and the price.

A common and popular way to scan a few negatives at a time is to use an Epson V500 or V550 for about $150. It would be time consuming to scan a lot of slides, but scanning your favorites can produce very good quality.

Perhaps the efficient combination would be to get lowest cost CDs made at development time as a digital "proof sheet". Then do slow, high quality scans of your "keepers" on a personal scanner like the Epsons.

I think this would depend on how much film you have (negatives or transparencies). Personally I would prefer to do my own scanning so that I have more control over the image scan, but it is very time consuming. The Epson Perfection V600 is a very nice scanner and it will not break the bank!

A friend that shoots film decided to have her pics put on cd instead of negatives. After 4 years of doing this she wanted to print a pic at 8 x 10. The pictures were all pixelated and the best she could do was 4 x 6. Walmart was putting her pics on a really small disk at extremely low res. Lesson learned.

If you have pictures put on a disk, you should ask at what res they are saving. Personally, I would go with negatives and scan them. Then you know you will have your pics.

The Epson scanners do an awesome job of scanning.

I process my own film then scan it using an Epson Perfection 3200 scanner. This scanner is about 10 years old. Epson makes some very fine scanners and would be worth looking into as the prices are rather reasonable.

I've noticed some photo labs offer a high resolution disc, for ten bucks, or so, extra. Some don't. Seems that would be a good deal for ten bucks, especially if one doesn't already have a good scanner.

All CD's are not created equal. Be sure to check, and see the resolution of the scan. Not all offer hi-res scanning.
