I just had an opportunity to photograph lightning and found it so frustrating...I found that my camera would not take a shot...like it was too dark. I was able to capture just one photo..out of like trying for almost 45 minutes. What was I doing wrong? Had the camera set on Bulb opened out my aperture..should I have turned off Auto Focus? I think that this may have been the problem. My ISO was set at 1200. I found the image had tons of noise...help!!

I use a Canon 5D mk3, 24/105 L lens, set to Manual, manual focus on infinity, f5.4 or f6, auto ISO. 30sec, on a tripod.. Use a remote trigger and just keep firing it every 30sec.. OK, so I get a lot of blank shots but if the lightning is putting on a show I get a few keepers...I had a go at the photo you put up but it was a very small file so couldn't do much with ti...I shoot in RAW and use Photoshop and Topaz in post production... Take care...John

Some of the best lightening shots I've ever seen. I think they are terrific.

Awesome shots of lightning. We don't have much lightning here in north Idaho.
